Weekly Wisdom – Know When To Lay Down
I want to share a story with you guys.
One day, this experienced health and fitness guy was at the gym. He was doing a new workout routine. But, many of the exercises were based on ones he had done in the past.
He did not lift more weight, do more reps or complete more sets than he had done previously. So he was confident that he could do all of the exercises easily and without injury.
He worked his way through all of the exercises. He followed our own preferences of doing a warmup set so as not to injure the muscles.
The exercises gave him a little strain. But that is one reason we all go to the gym, to improve our bodies through resistance and conditioning. After all, we don’t go to the gym just to sweat.
At the end of the workout, the guy felt his muscles tightening and becoming stiff.
It is important to note, he did the exercises with great form and did not overexert his muscles.
So, why was he stiff?
It is because when we do a specific exercise, you work your main muscles as well as your support muscles.
When you bench press, you are working your chest muscles, but you are also working many muscles in the arms and the torso. Some to help lift and others to help stabilize.
The weights he lifted were not too much for his main muscles that he was targeting. But he had not used some of the stabilizing muscles in a while and they were the ones becoming tight and stiff.
So, one lesson here is when you are doing an exercise you have not done in a while, lift light for a week to get your body accustomed to it.
But, that is not the main lesson. With his muscles feeling tight and stiff, they also caused some pain.
The testosterone in you tells you to be a man, go to the gym and work through the pain. But, we are now older and wiser men.
The wisdom in him told him to take time off and allow his muscles to heal. So, he took a week and a half off and did not lift any weights.
When he went back to the gym, he felt fantastic! No aches. No pains. Fully recovered.
Now, it takes different time frames for different injuries and those also vary depending on the person.
The point is, if you injure yourself, listen to your body, not your ego. Be a wise man rather than a stubborn and injured one. Rely upon the wisdom you have obtained over the years and allow
yourself to recover fully. Your body will thank you.
