Do you fall into the trap of saying “I will do that when _____”?
Have you ever heard of hyperbolic discounting?
What?!?!
Most people haven’t. Basically what this means is that the further away something is into the future, the less importance it is commonly given.
Here is an easy example. If you were told that you were absolutely going to die on a specific date 30 years from now if you did not exercise at least 1 hour a day, after the initial shock of the news, how much importance would most people place on that date?
The answer is “not much.” It is 30 years away.
Now, what if you were told that you were going to absolutely and certainly die in 24 hours if you did not start exercising 1 hour a day? How much importance would you place on it?
I am here to tell you that a majority of the population would start exercising IMMEDIATELY.
The truth of the matter is that none of us really know when we are going to die. We can read reports, look at the life spans of relatives and become educated on how we can live longer and healthier.
But, in the end, none of us actually know.
The point we are trying to get across to you is this > Life Will Not Wait For You.
You may think, “I will plan a trip around the world with my spouse when she retires.” Well, unfortunately, one of you may pass away (accident or natural causes) before she retires.
Or, I am going to take up a hobby or begin a new habit when the kids are all grown and out of the house.
I think you get what we are saying. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Life is a collection of moments and experiences. We do not believe in waiting or postponing things based upon a date or an event that may or may not ever happen.
Life is now. Live it fully.
