Do you fall into the trap of saying “I will do that when _____”?
Have you ever heard of hyperbolic discounting?
What?!?!
Most people haven’t. Basically what this means is that the further away something is into the future, the less importance it is commonly given.
Here is an easy example. If you were told that you were absolutely going to die on a specific date 30 years from now if you did not exercise at least 1 hour a day, after the initial shock of the news, how much importance would most people place on that date?
The answer is “not much.” It is 30 years away.
Now, what if you were told that you were going to absolutely and certainly die in 24 hours if you did not start exercising 1 hour a day? How much importance would you place on it?
I am here to tell you that a majority of the population would start exercising IMMEDIATELY.
The truth of the matter is that none of us really know when we are going to die. We can read reports, look at the life spans of relatives and become educated on how we can live longer and healthier.
But, in the end, none of us actually know.
The point we are trying to get across to you is this > Life Will Not Wait For You.
You may think, “I will plan a trip around the world with my spouse when she retires.” Well, unfortunately, one of you may pass away (accident or natural causes) before she retires.
Or, I am going to take up a hobby or begin a new habit when the kids are all grown and out of the house.
I think you get what we are saying. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Life is a collection of moments and experiences. We do not believe in waiting or postponing things based upon a date or an event that may or may not ever happen.
Life is now. Live it fully.

Once upon a time the world was male dominated. And, in many parts of the world, it still is. Even in a country like the USA, there have been studies shown that women are paid less for the same effort giving support to inequality.
So why are we covering this topic on a page designed for the fitness of men over 40?
Because this ties into mental health, directly.
What is common, in the world, is for an inequality or injustice to exist. It will be the cultural norm and defended as such.
Over time, viewpoints shift and the inequality or injustice is attempted to be corrected. When this happens, many times there is an overcorrection. This is what we mean.
Because the world has been male dominated, when a culture attempts to correct this in exchange for equality, they inevitably cause a reverse (an inequality for men).
We have heard the arguments. Things like “serves the men right” and “let them see what it is like.”
Here is the problem with that. Many men today never created or even supported that kind of behavior. Yet, they are punished for it. And the result is the emasculation of men.
Men do not want to stand up for themselves to they become punching bags and pushovers. They are afraid to be seen as standing in the way of progress.
And, believe it or not, men from all over the world endure this and it creates stress, which then results in dramatic increases in acid and can cause a whole host of problems (read this article on stress > https://www.facebook.com/MensFitnessAfter40/posts/963606777521304)
During this time where the world continues to try and rectify past wrongs and balance the scales of inequality, it is important for you not to be part of yet another problem of inequality.
You can still be a responsible, compassionate, loving, caring, strong and respectful gentleman while helping the scales of inequality balance. You do not have to be a pushover. You do not have to be a punching bag.
I am here to tell you guys, you are teaching your sons, daughters, friends and family to expect men to be pushovers. They are all observing you and your behavior.
And it is better to be a strong representative of a good man than an emasculated representative of a weak man.
Remember guys, Total Fitness is more than going to the gym. It is whole body. It is the whole man.

When you finish reading the article, check the comments for an accompanying instructional video.
Do you suffer from stiffness? Is it commonly located in your neck and shoulders?
Guess what? You are not alone.
Some of the most common areas for men to have aches and stiffness is their lower back, shoulders and neck area.
Now, some of this can actually be from injury to a specific location. But, for the most part, many of us have stiff muscles, joints that are not lubricated enough, stress and inflammation which cause the aches.
We have discussed how to deal with stress before as well as eating the right foods and staying away from the wrong ones and how that helps reduce inflammation. Here are links to those posts:
We even covered stretching, which will help with stuff muscles and unlubricated joints > https://www.facebook.com/MensFitnessAfter40/posts/955051255043523
But, today, we are specifically going to target the neck and one simple stretch that you can do no matter where you are.
Performing this every day should help with the tension, stiffness and aches in your neck area. Also, if you are feeling your stress in your neck and shoulders (at work), just stop for a few minutes, do this and it should help.
You can do this in your chair or sitting on the floor. Either is fine. But you must have your back straight. We will share doing this in a chair.
Sit up straight. Shoulders back. Do the following:
1) Look down. Touch your chin to your chest.
2) Look up. Push your head as far back as you can.
Do that 5 times slowly and really try to stretch the muscles. Then:
1) Tilt head to the right. Try to touch your ear to your shoulder.
2) Tilt head to the left. Try to touch your ear to our shoulder.
Do that 5 times slowly and really try to stretch the muscles. Next we are going to combine the moves.
1) Touch your chin to your chest. Now we are going to rotate to the left trying to touch your ear to your shoulder. Continue to rotate around by pushing the head back and looking up, followed
by more rotation to try and touch your right ear to your right shoulder. And return to the position of the chin to the chest.
2) Go in the opposite direction, rotating to the right.
You are basically rotating your head in a slow circle one way and back to the other.
Do that 5 times slowly.
Some feel immediate relief. Others may not. But doing this consistently will keep the neck and trap area stretched out which will lead to less aches, less tension headaches and a greater mobility.
Remember, if you do not take care of your body, it will not take care of you.

When do we eat the worst? Commonly it is 3 different times.
1) Holiday Celebrations
2) On vacation
2) When we are away from the house
Today we are going to tackle the 3rd one.
When we are out and about running errands or when we have to leave the house in a hurry, we are at the mercy of what is convenient. And many times that is fast food or snacks at a gas station.
With a little bit of advanced planning and a visit to the grocery store, you can substitute those “convenient” and likely less good for you options for great tasting and healthy ones.
Here are some of our favorite quick and healthy snacks on the go.
1) Bananas and Apples. These fruits are packed with energy, taste great and are easy to carry with you. Just do not leave them in the sun, make sure they are organic and remember to wash the apple first.
2) Pistachios and Almonds. We like to eat these on the go more than other tree nuts (pecans, brazil nuts, walnuts) simply because they are easier to eat while on the go. They are loaded with good fat which means they will help to curb your appetite and so you do not remain hungry.
3) Biltong. Kalahari Biltong is air dried, thinly sliced beef. It does not have sugar or MSG in it. The beef is loaded with protein so it helps fill you up while feeding your muscles. Just remember to drink water with it because protein requires water to be processed.
4) Larabar. We try to stay away from processed food. However, these are made from simple ingredients. Just stay away from the peanut butter ones since peanuts are legumes and we are not designed to eat legumes. We favor the Banana Bread ones that are made with bananas, dates and almonds.
There ya go. Now you have 4 easy to grab, healthy snacks while on the go. They are loaded with vitamins and nutrients and will help you stay on the healthy lifestyle way of eating.

Tea, as a beverage, has been consumed for thousands of years and green tea is one of 3 popular kinds.
Green Tea is derived from the camellia sinensis leaves and buds that does not go through the withering process like Oolong or black tea.
It has been written about as far back as 618 AD, in China.
There are many articles that talk about the benefits of Green Tea such as improved brain function, fat loss, protecting against cancer and lowering the risk of heart disease. And, here at MFA40, we only drink Organic Green Tea to remove any issues with GMO or pesticides.
However, there is one health aspect of it that is not always reported. It contains Sirtuins.
You may wonder, “what is a sirtuin?”
Glad you asked.
According to Oxford Languages, a sirtuin is “a type of protein involved in regulating cellular processes including the aging and death of cells and their resistance to stress.”
Sirtuins are reported to basically promote longevity in organisms.
Foods that are high in sirtuin activators are called sirtfoods. And guess what one of the top 10 sirtfoods is? Yep! Green Tea!
In addition to B vitamins, folate, manganese, potassium, magnesium and other antioxidants, it is a top sirtuin activator.
As we get older, we do look for things that can help with our mental and physical health. If something can aid in better health and might extend our lives, we see it as a no lose situation.
So, as long as you are not allergic, try to add some green tea into your diet and reap a whirlwind of benefits.

When we were teenagers and young men, we could sleep on a hard floor in a weird position, get up and not be sore at all. I am sure as some of you read that sentence you were thinking about how sore and stiff you would be.
I asked many people why this is. Then, I came across an answer that made sense when I spoke to Dr. Craig Binner DC. He explained that when we are teenagers and into our early 20s, our bodies have an abundance of growth hormone. This is to aid with the actual physical growth of our bodies.
As we get older, our bodies do not need as much growth hormone because our bodies are at full maturity. So, our bodies only produce what is needed in order to maintain or repair our mature bodies. It reduces the amount of natural human growth hormone because we no longer need it for accelerated body growth.
We wrote about steroids last week (https://www.facebook.com/MensFitnessAfter40/posts/1041370939744887). This is a synthetic way to give the body growth hormones. But, it can and does have negative side effects, some quite serious.
Think about this. If our bodies were capable of producing human growth hormone when we were younger, why can’t it do it now? The answer is that the body can increase our natural human
growth hormone production. But we have to help it along. You can do high intensity interval training, get good sleep and at least 8 more things. 3 of those things happen to be supplements.
So, today we are going to share 3 supplements that have been known to naturally increase human growth hormone production.
We have to remind you of the following for legal reasons > We are not medical professionals. This is from our own experience and for entertainment purposes only. As always, consult with
your medical professional before taking anything.
With that being said, here they are.
Gamma Aminobutyric Acid is the formal name of GABA. It is a non-protein amino acid that sends signals around your brain (neurotransmitter). It has a calming effect on your brain and central nervous system. When taken before bed, it can increase natural HGH production by up to 200%.
L-arginine and L-lysine. These 2 amino acids combined together before exercise and before sleep has shown to increase natural HGH production by….drum roll…700%! And that is one reason it is commonly in protein powders.
We commonly take 1/2 teaspoon of each of these 3, in powder form, around 30 minutes before we work out. And we only use these on the days that we go to the gym.
There are many places that you can get these supplements. However, our preferred source is Bulk Supplements. They use pure raw ingredients, have an FDA inspected facility, lab tested for purity and they are completely transparent (that means they will provide certificates of authenticity on their products).
To make it easy for you, here is a link > https://mfa40.com/bulksupplements And, make sure when you check out to use the code SAVE5. It will save you 5% on your order courtesy of MFA40.
Remember guys, as we get older we can still feel and look great. We simply have to approach things a little differently than when we were younger because our bodies have changed.
If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
Also, if you are serious about total fitness. About feeling great with solutions designed just for you. If you want to end decades of searching and following information not designed specifically for you. Then check out our 90 day program called EVOLUTION > https://mfa40.com/evolution/

Gear. Gym Candy. Juice. HGH. Roids. Or simply just steroids. All are terms for anabolic steroids. A substance used by many people, men and women, around the world to help accelerate their performance.
Some use it for more speed. Others for greater stamina. Many men use it for gaining muscle faster. And some men use it to help try to fight aging.
Regardless of the objective, usage of synthetic steroids are not ideal and can be downright harmful. According to DrugAbuse.gov, anabolic steroid misuse can lead to kidney problems or failure, liver damage and tumors, enlarged heart, high blood pressure, increased risk of stroke and heart attack (in people of all ages).
And, in men specifically, it can cause shrinking testicles, decreased sperm count, baldness, development of breasts and an increased risk of prostate cancer.
If all of that is not bad enough, it can actually have the opposite effect on your body, long term.
You have heard of actors and athletes using steroids haven’t you? They are using synthetic human growth hormones. When you inject synthetic HGH into the body, it actually has the opposite long term effect.
When synthetic HGH is injected, the pituitary gland detects that HGH is in the body and says “I don’t need to produce this anymore.” And, it can reduce, often times almost stop production
of natural HGH.
You have seen or heard of body builders that shrink in size after they stop using steroids haven’t you? Well, now you know why.
In order to achieve lasting long term results, you need to know the right path and the right tools. There are no direct short cuts.
You must eat in a manner that supports a healthy lifestyle. Take supplements that are natural and help your body produce its own human growth hormone. You should have an exercise routine that helps you achieve your objectives without injury. And you need plenty of restful periods and sleep.
We actually produced a video, “How To Naturally Increase Your Testosterone (What You NEED To Know)”. It is completely free and will help get you started in the right direction. All we ask for is your email address. You can get access to it here > https://mfa40.com/landing-pages/tat-landing/
Remember guys, there are no shortcuts to success. But, there are easier and more effective ways to achieve the results you seek. That is the foundation of Men’s Fitness After Forty – Simple Concepts. Powerful Results. We deliver what we call “time compression.” We give you years of knowledge and experience in hours.

Hey guys! Want to give your chest muscles a little boost to help their growth? We have a simple secret for you that is easy to add into your routine.
The most common chest exercise, with weights, is the bench press. There are different “experts” that say to do 3 sets of 10 reps, 3 sets of 6 reps, do pyramids, upside down pyramids, etc. For every expert, there seems to be varying opinions on the best option.
We have found that the option you use is really dependent upon the result you seek. Whether that is to have big muscles, well defined muscles, gain strength or just maintain what you have.
However, there is one fairly universal truth in regards to your muscle growth or maintenance in general. And that is that for your muscles to trigger growth, they need to stay under load for at least 45 seconds.
So, loading the bar with super heavy weight and doing 2 or 3 reps will begin to tear the muscle apart. But triggering growth requires more time under load (meaning you have to hold or press the weight longer).
At the same time, having no weight on the bar and lifting it 10 times puts the muscle under load for a longer period of time but does not have the weight needed to tear the muscle apart.
One of the most ideal ways to solve this is to place heavy enough weight on the bar to really put the muscles under stress and do 8 to 10 reps slowly, lowering the bar down and pressing it back up. We have noticed that doing slow reps begins to be a challenge for guys because they get stuck on the rep count rather than doing the exercise correctly.
So, we use a little trick that is easier for guys to incorporate into their routines. It is called Push Ups Until Failure. It’s fairly simple to do. When you do your flat bench workout, immediately after the last rep of each set, drop to the floor and do pushups until you can’t do anymore, with good form…no cheating because you are only cheating yourself.
After you do your sets of flat bench, move on to incline bench and do the same thing, with one small twist. Inclined bench focuses on the upper chest. In order to maintain the same focus, you need to do decline pushups. So, after you do a set of incline pushups, immediately drop to the floor, put your feet on the bench and do pushups until you can’t do them anymore.
Remember, if you do 3 sets of flat bench exercises you will do 3 sets of pushups. You need to match the pushup sets to the bench press sets for both flat and incline bench.
This little trick will allow the weights to help tear the muscles apart and the pushups will keep the muscles under load for over 45 seconds. Just be sure not to rush through them and keep
good form.

Procrastination (as defined by Oxford Languages) > the action of delaying or postponing something.
We are all guilty of this. “I will do that tomorrow.” Or “I will do that later.”
When I was a younger man, I knew the concept of death. But I honestly felt like I had an endless supply of days. So putting something off until tomorrow was easy to do.
As I got older, I became much more aware of time. And, as I got married and had kids, my personal time became more precious to me because I wanted to spend more of it with my family. So, anytime work related things would want to take away from my personal time, I would be very aware.
Also, as I got older (and I am sure this applies to everyone), I have had opportunities present themselves. And due to a lack of action, I missed out on those opportunities thinking they would be there tomorrow.
Additionally, I have had people in my life that I thought I would have more time with. That is because they were still relatively young when they died.
Lastly, I have had family and friends get into accidents as well as get sick and I could have lost them. But, fortune smiled upon them and I did not. I find it interesting that in these cases, people become very aware of the lack of time as they hope their loved one recovers and all of the time they could have spent with them.
Guys, as we go into the New Year, make a conscious effort to quit procrastinating. Do not put it off until tomorrow. We all have 86,400 seconds per day. Make them count. Because tomorrow may not come for that opportunity, for that loved one or even for you.

This is about the most asked question that we are asked. The 2nd most asked question is about proper diet, which we already covered here > https://www.facebook.com/MensFitnessAfter40/posts/913984342483548.
Now, we do get many questions about how to workout after being injured. Due to the fact that there are so many different kinds of injuries, getting back to exercising after injury is specific to the type of injury.
If you have done any kind of research, which…if you are on this page…we bet that you have. You will have come across an enormous variety of workout routines with many of them contradicting the others. Workout with high reps and low weight. Workout with high weight and low reps. Do them both in the same workout.
We know. It can be very, very confusing.
The thing is, some of those workouts are “gimmicks” and do not work. However, most of those workouts are actually valid. But, what most do not consider is that the workout you find is created for a specific audience and that may not be tailored specifically for you.
So, what we will share are some exercises that most men 40 and older can and likely should do. Of course, we are not medical professionals and you should contact your own medical professional if you have questions about whether you should try these or not. These are exercises we do and they are actually contained in our 90 day EVOLUTION Program (more on that
later).
Do you know what a compound exercise is? If not, don’t fret. A lot of people don’t.
A compound exercise is one that uses multiple muscle groups to perform it. For example, let’s take 2 exercises that many of you are already aware of: the bench press and the bicep curl.
The bench press uses the chest (pectoral) and arm (tricep and bicep) muscles in order to perform it. If you do it with free weights, there are additional muscles in the torso that are activated
to maintain stability. Since this uses multiple muscles groups, this is a compound exercise.
The bicep curl (shown in the image in this post) focuses on the bicep muscle only and these are referred to as isolation exercises. You allow gravity to bring the weight down and your bicep brings the weight back up.
Compound exercises are closer simulations to everyday life. Bend over, pick up things, move things around, put things on shelves…all compound exercises. Compound movement is the way our bodies are designed to move. So, this is where most guys should start with their workout routines.
Additionally, compound exercises commonly activate testosterone production more than isolated exercises do. This helps with more lean muscle production and the more lean muscle you have, the more fat is burned.
Now that you know that compound exercises are what you should perform. What are the exercises?
We will not go into the explanation of how to perform each. That would make this post too long. However, we will list them out for you.
We workout 4 days a week, in a row, with 3 days of rest. For the purpose of this example, we will use Monday through Thursday as our workout days. We perform 2 sets of 10 reps for everything but abdominals.
On Monday and Wednesday, our compound workout consists of:
* Flat Bench Press
* Incline Bench Press
* Pull Ups
* Barbell Row
On Tuesday and Thursday, our compound workout consists of:
* Leg Squat
* Military Press
* Deadlift
* Power Clean
We perform an abdominal workout (2 sets of 12 reps) each of the 4 days. Some of the common ones are double crunches, Russian twists and scissor kicks.
That is it. Each day should take less than an hour. As it becomes easy to do 2 sets of 10 reps, slightly increase the weight. This type of exercising should keep you fit and strong with minimal chance of injury.
We change our workout routine about every 90 days so that muscle memory does not kick in and stop our results. But this is a great beginner and intermediate workout. Remember, you do not have to go to the gym for hours and hours to become or stay fit. That is unless you are trying to get the body of a bodybuilder.
As we explained earlier, we do have a 90 day program called EVOLUTION.
